You’re six years old. Mom’s in hospital. Dad says she’s “done something stupid.” She finds it hard to be happy. So you start to make a list of everything that’s brilliant about the world. Everything that’s worth living for. (1) Ice cream. (2) Kung Fu movies. (3) Burning things. (4) Laughing so hard you shoot milk out your nose. (5) Construction cranes. (6) Me. You leave it on her pillow. You know she’s read it because she’s corrected your spelling. Soon, the list will take on a life of its own. A play about depression and the lengths we will go to for those we love. Every Brilliant Thing is sad, but it is also gloriously funny and exceptionally warm. It’s a show that spells out a little of what depression can do to people, but it also highlights the irrepressible resilience of the human spirit and the capacity to find delight in the everyday. —Time Out (London). back to top of page …

The Insiders: A Tom Petty Tribute
It all starts with front man Max Lockwood. “I grew up listening to Tom. My mom would play Tom Petty’s Greatest Hits while she worked out. I’d sit at the top of the stairs and listen to those songs—it was my most requested CD at the age of 6.” In high school, Lockwood’s band Big Dudee Roo started covering Mary Jane’s Last Dance at their frequent shows in West Michigan. “Tom was part of the great American landscape to me—a legend by the time I was musically conscious. We got a great crowd reaction with Petty tunes, and people frequently commented that I sounded authentically ‘Petty’.” Nothing has changed with time. After the passing of Tom Petty in October of 2017 Lockwood organized the band by pulling together some of his favorite musicians for a benefit concert. After a sold-out show that raised thousands for a local domestic violence shelter The Insiders decided they wouldn’t back down. “We try to honor what Mr. Petty and the Heartbreakers have done for rock and roll each night. We’re fans of the music foremost. These songs are woven into the fabric of the American identity.” They’ve found no shortage of demand, selling out shows everywhere they go in the first year of the band’s existence. Local Spins’ John Sinkevics had this to say: “The Insiders set the bar at a new level for Tom Petty tributes.” back to top of page …

Saturday, November 19 6 PM |
In the full-length film Love, Simon, the story follows Simon Spier, a teenage boy whose circumstances place him in awkward positions and disrupt his friendships as he faces the intimidating process of coming out. When Simon begins emailing an anonymous person online who shares some of his struggles, he is subsequently forced to overcome a number of obstacles that help him grow as a person and ultimately find himself. Presented free to the community by The Whitehall High School Gay-Straight Alliance, this group seeks to provide a safe space for all students and to generate support for the LGBTQ+ community within Whitehall schools and through local events. Although only comprised of seven dedicated members at this time, their hopes are to grow the GSA significantly this year before the senior majority graduates. Whitehall GSA meetings are relaxed with lots of talking, activity planning, Kahoots, (and sometimes even breakfast pizza!) and they meet every Thursday morning. For more information/questions contact Ariana Treat by email at aritreat05@gmail.com. On this special evening, baked goods will be sold at the entrance before the movie begins, and the GSA will speak briefly after the film on their mission/plans, and key takeaways from the movie. Open and free to the public, the Whitehall GSA hopes to make this Free Community Movie Night an annual event to raise awareness and foster understanding and kindness to people of all identities and walks of life. back to top of page … |

| The Playhouse at White Lake Proudly Presents Ruth and Max Bloomquist: Changing of the Seasons
Listen to their interview on the Shelley Irwin WGVU Morning Show. “…veritable folk music legends in Michigan, captivating audiences with their songs, their harmonies and their folk-infused charm.” John Sinkevics, Jan. 6, 2012, The Grand Rapids Press “Pure Michigan Folk music of the highest caliber. Ruth has a beautiful voice that warms the heart. With Max on bass, together their music makes a perfect tonic for a cold November day.” Seamus Shinners, Connemara Concerts 11/26/2016 “They are charming, traditional, and skilled musicians. You are in for a real treat! Ruth stands out in particular with her vocals, which are rich, warm, and mellifluous. Though the Bloomquists have been at this since the 70s, I only first heard them perform a year ago, and when Ruth started singing, I was blown away. Fantastic."
