Michigan Mandolin Orchestra

MichiganMandolin OrchestraJoin the Michigan Mandolin Orchestra in its 7th season with a unique spread of mandolin music. The Orchestra delves into an arrangement of Schubert's Sonatina for Violin, Weber's Der Freischutz, and Vaughan Williams' Rhosymedre. As always, there is an offering of lighter pieces that include Italian folk classics like Al, Di LaAmarilli Mia Bella, and many others.  Another highlight of the show will be music director, Brian Oberlin's arrangement of Calace's Danza Dei Nani and an original piece of music by Mandola-ist, Bob Phillips. Listeners can expect Oberlin to play a solo piece or two to tie the whole concert together.

Michigan Mandolin Orchestra Biography
Led by Brian Oberlin, “Michigan’s Mandoliner,” the Michigan Mandolin Orchestra has been bringing its eclectic sound to venues across Michigan since 2019. The MMO plays an incredibly diverse lineup including classical treasures, Italian and Irish folk songs, and an occasional rock anthem, as well as original compositions by Oberlin and orchestra members Bob Phillips and Fred Willson. Their repertoire includes everything from Schubert, Bach and Beethoven to Danny Elfman, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant.

The orchestra’s 16 members are professional musicians, music teachers, arrangers, composers, and musical hobbyists. They perform their music on mandolins, mandolas, octave mandolins, mandocellos, guitars, and contrabass, with some orchestra members adept at several of the instruments.

The Michigan Mandolin Orchestra is part of a musical tradition that dates back to 1878, when a mandolin orchestra performed at the Paris World’s Fair and kicked off a global mandolin orchestra craze that lasted 40 years. Before the mandolin mania died out during the Jazz Age, there were hundreds of mandolin orchestras performing across the U.S.

Although the mandolin orchestra era has been largely forgotten, it has seen a resurgence in recent decades. The Michigan Mandolin Orchestra is one of more than 40 formal mandolin orchestras actively performing in the country.

Hours TBD in June

Swimming into Summer with Science

Hilite InternationalThanks to the generous support of Hilite International, The Playhouse at White Lake will play host to the Kidz Science Safari throughout the month of June.

These 12 interactive STEM exhibits can be freely explored at our portable museum theatre with true, hands-on immersion activities. Best of all, Kidz Science Safari has been designed to be aligned with the elementary science standards for an experience that’s not just fun, it's fabulous educational fun.

Kidz Science SafariJoin us this summer with over a dozen awesome activities to engage your child's active mind:

  • Programmable Robots that students can get hands-on with as an introduction to coding at the elementary level with line-tracking robots.
  • Airways, a physics demonstration that pushes colorful balls all around a maze of clear tubes that students absolutely love.
  • Bike Generator that enables kids to convert their potential energy into electrical energy by illuminating a tall tower of light.
  • 3D Printing shows your students the exciting world of desktop prototyping and manufacturing that is literally changing our world.
  • Gravity Wall where students create a pathway of twists and turns and then test their design using small balls and the force of gravity.
  • Magnetism employs several ball bearings drawn by magnets to travel through a maze along with a cartoon portrait that the kid’s apply the "hair, moustache, and beard" to by using a magnet and iron filings.
  • Domino Race is just that—an area where kids set up dominos in patterns, going up and down “steps” and then with a push—send the dominos crashing into each other while all the time learning about engineering, motion and force.
  • Giant Microscope allows the students to examine a nice collection of bugs, flowers, feathers — and any other object they’d like to see "up close"—on a large 21" screen.
  • Plasma Ball demonstrates an invention of Tesla as well as one of the states of matter.
  • Conductivity has the students compete to see who can complete the course without closing the circuit and lighting the light.
  • Radiometer brightly demonstrates how invisible particles of light can propel an object—and the brighter the light, the more absorption/repulsion of particles.
  • Bernoulli Exhibit demonstrates air pressure in a wonderful, yet simple activity.
  • Geometric Shapes has the student create anything from letters to numbers to trapezoids, squares, triangles—whatever they choose—using jersey loops on a really large pegboard.
  • Dino Dig with dinosaur bones, claws, and teeth that simulates the search for fossils.

More exhibits are being developed all the time

Snow White & the Seven Dwarves is a one hour musical written and conceived by Jim Caron, with the music written and arranged by Michael McGill. Additional music by Don Collins; additional dialogue by Jeff Hall and Matt Loehrke.

The White Lake Youth Theatre welcomes Missoula Children’s Theatre back to present Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs with our incredible students, an original adaptation of the classic fairy tale starring students ages 6-18.

A young princess named Show White finds herself in peril when her step-mother, the Queen, is told by her Magic Mirror that the princess is fairer than she! Aided by her two Henchmen and a band of evil Bats, the Queen plots to get rid of Snow White. Snow White escapes from the Queen and from the Black Forest Creatures with help from Witless the Woodsman, and finds a home with the Seven Dwarfs. When the Queen learns of Snow White’s whereabouts, she attempts to poison Snow White. Hercules Musical Play CampSpring Musical Play Camp Hercules the Musical

The White Lake Youth Theatre (WLYT) welcomes the Missoula Children's Theatre (MCT) back to The Playhouse at White Lake for a one-week Spring Musical Play Camp featuring the beloved story of King Arthur's Quest. This program is open to actors ages 5-18 and partial scholarships are available.  This program is also WLACE eligible.  Please use the Contact Us form on this website to ask Cindy Beth to ask about scholarships. Use the Buy Tickets button to the left to register.

Musical Play Camp Summary

Welcome to Ancient Greece, where the focus is on the big tournament. The Olympic Games are starting soon, and the Cyclops and Titans are both expecting to win big in the Games. But the tournament can’t start without Hercules. Will the legendary strongman of the ancient World spark the flame and start the festivities on time, or will his legendary tardiness get in the way of the Games? Join us for a tale the scholars will talk about for ages as mythical creatures and Olympians alike share in a friendly competition. Along the way, we may just learn that true strength lies not in our muscles but in our character.

The Missoula Children's Theatre tour team arrives in our little town for seven days with their “little red truck” loaded full with everything we'll need for King Arthur's Quest, including the set, lights, costumes, props and make-up, really everything it takes to put on a play. The team will hold an open audition and cast up to 60 local students to perform in this production at the end of the week. The show is rehearsed throughout the week after-school and a public performance will be presented at the end of the week to show off the unbelievable results of this one-week long unique, educational theatre experience.

Missoula Children's TheatreMCT’s mission is the development of life skills in children through participation in the performing arts, which marries nicely with our similar White Lake Youth Theatre mission: to cultivate a compassionate community of youth artists through education and access to the arts.

Register today by clicking on the "Buy Tickets" button to the left to secure your student's space as all kids in the workshop will perform.

Assembly Style Audience Experience with Missoula Children's Theatre

Recommended for the humor of ages 5-12, but all audiences welcome

Students ages 5 to 12 (and everyone who loves them) will enjoy this interactive and entertaining assembly-style program designed to expand imaginations. Students take their seat in the 108 year-old historic theater at The Playhouse at White Lake to learn about how the art theater began in an interactive format, looking at ancient Greece from a pair of comedic Olympians Themselves (hint, hint, it’s Dave and Emma, the co-directors of Hercules, which has a pay what you can, one hour musical performance the next day, Saturday, April 12, at 12 PM noon!)

Missoula Children's TheatreCatch the Greek fever and join us for one or both days in a row, as we explore the story of Hercules and the impact of Greek theatre on the art form we know and love today.

Pay what you can, and there is no obligation to participate, and nothing to fear from the experience. Simply let us know when you check in if you'd rather sit in the balcony, where you can watch and observe without any pressure of involvement.

We can't wait to share this Greek interactive theatre with our audiences
