Three-Way Street Three-Way Street, a popular West Michigan Folk/Indie/Rock band, is known for high energy, live performances that have earned them a loyal following in the short time they have worked together. Led by Andrea Mathews' powerful vocals, the driving rhythm section of Bradley Rose and Jeffrey Baldus combined with the sweet melodies of Chris Brock on lead guitar make theirs a performance not to be missed. Andrea has taken the Howmet Playhouse stage as both a musician and as an actor in many theatre productions including, most recently, Leaving Iowa, last summer. Snider & Smith, the husband and wife duo of Karin & Eric Smith, who are widely known in the area, will grace the Howmet stage with their smooth harmonies, unique covers, and memorable original songs. Their easy banter and sound have drawn large audiences to various venues and the Howmet is pleased to welcome them to the First Friday’s Concert Series. |

Stella! First Fridays in April is all about Michigan women as we welcome Stella! to the Playhouse stage, along with opening act Elaina Burress and Friends. All powerhouse female musicians, this will be a night of “sinfully good” music. Stella! is a four-piece, all-women, American roots band from southeast Michigan and has been referred to as a singer-songwriter super group with three-part vocal harmonies and four songwriter voices. Featuring Michigan musicians Jo Serrapere, Jen Sygit (no stranger to the Playhouse stage), Diana Ladio, and Laura Ann Bates, these ladies have an impressive collective resume of musical credits, including Serrapere’s two appearances on A Prairie Home Companion. They are a near-religious experience. Hearing them perform in an intimate setting is like going to an Appalachian mountain church and hollering hallelujah with a Bible in one hand and a bottle of hooch in the other. They’re that sinfully good. ~Karen Koski, syndicated music writer (Billboard), house concert host. Elaina Burress first appeared on the Playhouse stage with national recording artist Meg Hutchinson in 2012, and has since moved into a blossoming songwriting and music career as a student at Interlochen Arts Academy. A contemporary acoustic artist reminiscent of Ingrid Michaelson and Cat Power, Elaina accompanies herself with her guitar or celebrated yellow uke, and toured last summer as a part of Academy Four, a powerhouse group of her classmates from Interlochen. She released her first album, Paper Love, in 2013. Elaina will be joined by some musicians friends as the opening act for Stella! |

The Karisa Wilson Band with special guest Kelsey Rottiers Grand Rapids powerhouse musician Karisa Wilson will appear with her band, the Karisa Wilson Band, for our last First Fridays concert, with special guest and opening act Kelsey Rottiers of Kelsey Rottiers and the Rising Tide. Karisa Wilson, now an accomplished vocalist and guitarist, started her musical journey as a classical violinist. Her style is eclectic Americana—a blend of jazz, blues, and folk—and Karisa was recognized in 2008 at the annual WYCE Jammie Awards as "Best New Artist", and won the coveted "Album of the Year". She has shared the stage with national artists Sam Phillips, Billy Bob Thornton, Talib Kweli, Tim Reynolds, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, The Subdudes and many others. An Evening with Bob Milne Bob Milne is considered to be the best ragtime/boogie-woogie pianist in the world. He was filmed and documented for future generations in 2004 during three days of interviews at the Library of Congress, and was declared a "National Treasure" at the conclusion. Mr. Milne, an active "Musical Ambassador" for the United States, has performed numerous times in Japan, including the Okinawan Islands and Hokkaido. He has also performed in this capacity for members of the Swiss Parliament at the U.S. Embassy in Berne. Mr. Milne's natural ability to hear and play music goes back to his early childhood. He makes the statement, "I knew how to play a piano long before I ever started. Just push down the notes you hear and the instrument will play itself. Can't everyone do this?" He considers either looking at music or practicing to be "cheating." A French horn player in High School, he went to the prestigious Eastman School of Music at the age of 17, and then became assistant First Horn in the Rochester Philharmonic at age 19. After symphony concerts the students all went and hung out in local places. When the piano player didn't show up at a sing-a-long saloon one night, Mr. Milne "filled in." They hired him on the spot. He continued playing the horn until age 21, then became a full time piano player in the Detroit area, playing seven nights a week for twenty five years. A comment often heard following one of his performances is, "unbelievable." Bob Milne teaches music history at various universities around the country, and is also the founder and director of the Frankenmuth Ragtime Festival in Michigan. His courses in the Lifelong Learning program at Florida/Atlantic University every winter are among the most popular in the curriculum. Mr. Milne has been averaging somewhere in the area of 250 performances per year. He is highly sought after for both his incredible piano playing and easy going, modest presentations. He claims, "If I have been given any ability at all, it is my duty to honor it by trying to improve that ability every time I perform." The list of music festivals he's appeared at is extensive. They include the Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival (Sedalia, Missouri), the Montreal Jazz Festival, the Eau Claire Ragtime Festival, Sacramento Ragtime Festive, plus many others. |
